Global communtity
My friend, L, has flow to South Africa yesterday for her mothers funeral. I am grateful for aeroplanes that allow us to be with loved ones in time of joy and times of grief. I am grateful for the Internet to connect us to loved ones in the world.
I was in London yesterday. I was at an event for entrepreneurs and the use social media. It was interesting. I took my 12 year old son with me. Needless to say, he was the youngest person in the room. See, the way I see it, is that to often adult or entrepreneurs produce solutions to problems. Whose problems?
My son stood amongst the group of adults and just observed. He then turned to me and said- they are all on their phones. What is the point of coming to a networking event and playing on your phone.
Interesting observation. Good one too. Everyone is talking! Talking without sound. Connecting. Connecting without touching, contact without connection, smiling without emotion but with emoticon. (emoti-con?)
Connected without connection.
L loosing her mother has brought this home so much more. When you get a text message saying- my mom is in hospital and very ill. It has no feeling attached apart from your own feeling. When I drove to see her, it was so much more real. To hold a friend in your arms while they are crying and shaking with sadness, you feel their grieve. You can feel their pain. You can see their tears and hear the anguish in their voice. Every sense of your being shares every sense of their being. No social media or text message or emoticon can portray this.
Social media portrays friendships around the world. Is their a difference between friendship and being connected? Can you be friends in a global world or are we to busy to take time with people close to us so it becomes easier to send a global message instead of spending quality time with less friends but build better, closer relationship. Relationships built on trust, openness and sincere emotion?
I wonder were we are heading with technology. Is it a love hate relationship? Is a global community sustainable? Are we loosing our own identities through having to think global or are we expanding our horizons? How are we connected? How will this melting pot end up?
A friend said to me the other day. The only way earth and humans will stand together will be when earth has an alien invasion. Food for thought for a global world?
