The adversity of diversity

Adversity: A difficult or unpleasant situation (misfortune, trouble, difficulty, hardship, distress, disaster, heartbreak, misadventure etc.)

Diversity: A range of different things (variety, miscellany, assortment, mixture, mix, range, medley, etc.)

There was a time not so long ago when diversity was "the in thing". We travelled, met people, experienced new places, shared ideas, encouraged people to better situations, find solutions to their challenges etc.

What the hell happened? Why is it that when I look at the news, newspaper, speak to people at social gatherings to find  time and time again that I get hit by the wall : diversity is all of a sudden the new adversity!

The best way I could express myself was simple: I travel often. A great number of times I am able to learn the  basics of the language of the country I travel to. I mean basic.

What I have come to realise, is that if I take language away and speak from my heart and use gestures, the world becomes a different place. The confusion becomes humour, sadness or understanding, joyfulness expressed as a smile and humans become helpful.

Is it that we use language as a celebration of our diversity or a tool for adversity?

The human connection has a language all of it's own.

How would you connect if you had no tongue?
